Controlling Value List and Field Access
IntermediateRestrict which fields users can see or edit, and understand how value list visibility interacts with record access.
What you'll learn
- How to set field-level access in a privilege set
- Marking fields as view-only or inaccessible
- How value list visibility relates to record-level restrictions
- Using calculations to conditionally restrict field access
Beyond table and layout restrictions, FileMaker lets you lock down individual fields within a table. You can make a field view-only, completely hidden, or editable only under certain conditions. This granularity is important for solutions where most users can see a record but should not see sensitive fields like salary or SSN.
Field-level access in a privilege set
In the Tables section of a privilege set, select a table and click "Custom privileges...". You can set access to each field: **Modifiable** (default for editable privilege sets), **View only** (can see but not edit), or **Inaccessible** (field appears blank; value cannot be viewed or edited).
