Opening, closing, and pausing hosted databases
BeginnerManage which databases are available to clients — open them for connections, close them for maintenance, or pause them to prevent writes.
What you'll learn
- The difference between Open, Closed, and Paused database states
- How to open and close databases from the Admin Console
- Why you should pause before performing a disk operation near a hosted file
Databases hosted on FileMaker Server have three states: Open (clients can connect), Closed (no connections, file still on disk), and Paused (connections maintained but writes blocked). Knowing when to use each state prevents data loss during maintenance.
Opening a database
In the Admin Console, go to Databases. If the file is listed but Closed, click the action menu (⋯) and choose Open. Server performs a consistency check on open if the file was not closed cleanly. A database must be in the FileMaker Server data folder or an additional database folder to be hosted.
