File encryption at rest in FileMaker Server
IntermediateProtect hosted database files with AES-256 encryption at rest so the data cannot be read if the server disk is accessed directly.
What you'll learn
- How to enable encryption on an existing FileMaker file
- How FileMaker Server opens encrypted files automatically using a stored password
- What encryption at rest protects — and what it does not
FileMaker supports AES-256 encryption at rest for .fmp12 files. An encrypted file cannot be opened without the encryption password, protecting data against physical disk access or server theft. Encryption is set per file and does not affect client-side performance noticeably.
Encrypt a FileMaker file
In FileMaker Pro (the file must be open and unhosted), go to File → Manage → Security → Encryption. Choose Encrypt. Set a strong encryption password — this is separate from any FileMaker account password. Save the file. The file is now encrypted; anyone who copies the .fmp12 file cannot open it without this password.
