Value list field formats — radio buttons, checkboxes, and drop-downs

Beginner

Choose the right UI control for value list fields: radio buttons, checkboxes, drop-down lists, and pop-up menus each have specific use cases.

What you'll learn

  • When to use radio buttons vs checkboxes vs drop-downs
  • How drop-down list differs from pop-up menu
  • How checkboxes store multiple values

FileMaker can display value list fields as radio buttons, checkboxes, drop-down lists, or pop-up menus — each format changes how users interact with the field.

Radio buttons — single selection, always visible

Radio buttons show all options simultaneously. Only one can be selected. Best for 2–5 options where all choices should be visible.

Good for: Status (Active / Inactive / Pending)
Not good for: 20-item country list — too many to display
